Tanzania has been plunged into mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Hafidh died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment in Zanzibar, according to an announcement by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi.
The Vice President conveyed the heartbreaking news to the nation, extending condolences to President Samia, the Hassan family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania.
Hafidh reportedly died at around 8:00am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition.
His death marks a major personal loss for President Samia, who has largely kept her family life away from the political spotlight.
Hafidh and President Samia had been married for decades and were parents to four children. He was known for maintaining a relatively low public profile despite his position as the husband of Tanzania’s president.
Funeral arrangements are expected to take place in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, with further details on the burial and national mourning programme expected from the Tanzanian authorities.
